With the newest EP from inventive punks LLACUNA, emotive immediacy never felt more alive and authentic

7 mins read

Fans of midwest emo bands and their precursors’ sparse, melancholic, and passionate compositions (think RITES OF SPRING) should find LLACUNA’s debut engrossing. A short, yet ingenious collection of technical, well-thought emotional pieces by the Catalonian quartet, “Llacuna” maintains a similarly striking tone, shifting between heart spaciousness and uplifting intensity. These guys’ inspirations stretch beyond the standard context and enchant with their rhythmic insistence. As it was with their fellow countrymen from Madrid, WILD ANIMALS, and their absolutely captivating record “Basements: Music To Fight Hypocrisy”, we’re stoked to give you the first listen of LLACUNA’s debut self-titled EP, streaming below, along with full lyrics to all of its 5 tracks. Bon Appétit!

A lagoon (in Catalan, “llacuna“) is not born out of nothing. Behind this band name we can find four regular members of the Spanish punk underground (Eric Font, Eloi Nadales, Albert Riera, Gerard Serrano), linked to acts like Hurricäde, I’M, Föbia, Turnstile, the Saltamarges label or the extinguished Eclectic music venue, to name a few examples. Their cover letter is the self-titled album “Llacuna” (October 2017), a five song EP where every track is different from each other despite starting from the same point: all that someone ended up baptizing as “emo-core” and would define the irruption of bands like Rites of Spring in 1985, a genre that currently continues alive internationally, constantly updating. All songs are also connected through Catalan lyrics that permanently navigate the hopelessness/hope dichotomy.

“Llacuna” by LLACUNA is out October 20th via La Agonía de Vivir, Pundonor Records, krimskramz (see our interview HERE) and Saltamarges. The EP was recorded and mixed by Santi Garcia and Borja Pérez at Ultramarinos Costa Brava (Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Spain,December 2016 and Summer 2017), and mastered by Ryan Schwabe in Philadelphia in August 2017. Artwork by Gerard Serrano (MidWest Studio).

LLACUNA are: Eric Font (bass, vocals), Eloi Nadales (drums), Albert Riera (guitar, vocals) and Gerard Serrano (guitar, vocals). Gues appearances by: Oskar Garcia (bass lines), Marçal Coll (trumpet on “Pumba”), Borja Pérez (tambourine on “Llamp que em partís”).

LLACUNA 12''

1. VERMUTS I A LA GÀBIA

Busco un lloc on caure mort.

[EN] A smoke screen hides the enemy, at the very back. Stuck inside the day-to-day spiral, real tired of full stops, looking for the night, salvation. I search for a place to drop dead. Good intentions are not enough when we’re reduced to cannon fodder. “Vermuts i a la gàbia, qui gemega ja ha begut” (*). Today I drink up my screams of rage, tomorrow I’ll spit them out to the future. The moonlight reminds me I’m alive, but today I drink up my screams of rage. There will always be one more night to betray the subconscious, one more night to escape and travel with the mind.

(*) “Vermuts i a la gàbia” (vermouths and in the carrier) is a particular transformation of the Catalan expression “muts i a la gàbia” (mute and in the carrier), that means “shut it”. The same thing happens with “Qui gemega ja ha begut” (whoever complains has already drunk), which is a transformation of the expression “qui gemega ja ha rebut” (whoever complains has already received) and we couldn’t find any similar expression in English, sorry.

2. VAS TENIR LLUM

[EN] Hey, you! Hold your head up high. Without sadness there’s no joy, lift your feet, stop dragging them around. Lift your feet. You might see shadows now, but at some point you had light. And light the fire because you haven’t been hugged enough in this cold. You might see shadows now, but at some point you had light. And light the fire because we haven’t hugged enough in this cold. Keep the kindling on, keep it burning.

[EN] Iron horse, forged with hope, drive me far away from here. With you I only carry a basket with yesterday’s hangover. Faced with the discord between the asphalt and the dirt road, your strength redirects, drives. Iron horse, never stop, give me your vigor to pedal for a new tomorrow.

I res era ferm perquè tot podia caure.

[EN] I don’t recognize your face but the memories are unforgettable. More than a thousand words, they’re memorable images. It became so cold it burned. And it burnt so much it was freezing. And nothing was sound because it could all fall. We both knew how this started but not how it would end. Lightning that’ll break me in love and hate. Lightning that’ll break me and set me on fire. We’ll both get naked only to dress up with hope.

5. PUMBA

[EN] Listen to the desire, yearning to play the game of feeling alive. Death will come. Dressed in the colour of your eyes, my eyes. Walking in circles I find myself where I was yesterday. And if you have to fall, hold on to me, I want to fall with you. A honest feeling that doesn’t discriminate colours or possessions. Death will come dressed in the colour of your eyes, my eyes.
